ABOUT THE PROBLEM
Approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide experience impaired vision, with nearly half of these cases being preventable or treatable. That means over 950 million people, primarily in the poorest communities across the global south, struggle day-to-day because quality eye and vision care are inaccessible due to limited infrastructure, lack of awareness or it is too expensive. Consequently, children cannot learn, adults cannot work and care for their families, and individuals can’t participate fully in their communities.
About 90% of people who experience impaired vision live in developing and resource limited countries, with Sub-Saharan Africa, South America and South Asia facing the greatest challenges. Women, rural populations, and older adults are also disproportionately affected. The most common kinds of preventable and treatable vision loss include uncorrected refractive errors (near/farsightedness), cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.
The economic impact of preventable vision loss is substantial, with global productivity losses from uncorrected vision impairment estimated at $411 billion annually. However, research shows that every $1 invested in international vision care interventions yields $36 in economic benefits, representing one of the most efficient and impactful international development investments available.
